RB Wren: Slim Pickings
Tincture of Everclear, orange peel, apple, coffee grounds, honey, black pepper, and ginger candy
Slim Pickings represents the artist’s endeavor to construct some semblance of comfort through food during years spent in poverty after arriving in New York from Malaysia at the peak of the recession: the fragrance “dish” comprises of tinctures created with freeze-dried fruits and other nonperishables sourced from food pantries and community centers in Queens, where the artist’s family settled upon moving to America. Through engaging with leftover food ingredients at the end of their economic life cycle—the bottom shelf of the food pantry—the piece explores the connections between scent, memory, and the intangible class-based and political ties that define and shape our lives.
