Janine Mackenroth

Janine Mackenroth (*1989 Munich, Germany) works on themes of equality and sustainability. She uses plant-based (nail) polish to create paintings, questioning traditional gender roles as well as the materiality of art itself. Starting with the development of biodegradable paint for her installations in public spaces on environmental issues, in 2015 she moved on to materials such as nail polish and make-up, which can also be seen as a commentary on a still male-dominated (art) world. Since 2018, she has been exploring human smell and producing scent installations. In 2020, she co-edited the publication “I Love Women in Art” about 100 artworks by female artists in Germany. Since 2021, the artist has been working on her innovation for sustainable art materials, funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection. At the same time, she cooperates with the Fraunhofer Institute and creates paintings with 100% plant-based paint made from potatoes. Since then, she has also been producing her own bio-based nail polish, which can also be found on her paintings in the colors of EURO banknotes. In 2023, she was commissioned by the EU as an artist for the New European Bauhaus project. Mackenroth transforms icons, changes their form and function and processes them into building blocks for a new, if possible, better and more sustainable world.
