Anna Novakov and Ron Hutt: Experiments in Olfactory and Musical Composition

Saturday, January 21st, 12pm

Saturday, February 4th, 12pm

Sounds and smells are natural sensory partners that use parallel systems of organization, notation and composition. They are also two of our most primal and emotive senses. By using Ableton Live, a soft synth digital audio work station along with notes from a micro perfume organ, Ron Hutt and Anna Novakov will create an integrated musical/ olfactory experience. The piece, produced during this performance, addresses the possibilities of inducing heightened associations of sound and scent.

The audience members will hear individual musical tracks that will be paired with olfactory notes distributed on scent strips. The musical segments build upon each other and are meant to augment and intensify the associated perfume notes. After 8 dyads, the event will conclude with a combined olfactory and musical composition.

At the end of the performance, audience members will receive a solid perfume of the composition with a QR code that links to the accompanying musical file.
