Mary Jones
Mary Jones is a NYC based artist working in abstract oil paintings. Recently integrating X-ray images into her work, she reverses the usual experience of seeing the body so that the medically exposed interior becomes a confrontation with mortality, as well as a site of surreal beauty and invasive surveillance. For her collaboration with David Falsberg on the Coma Aroma Chronicles, she responded to two scents from Phoenicia Perfumes, Skin Graft and PTSD. The paintings also address and incorporate Falsberg’s traumatic experience and survival from Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis and his ongoing evolution as an artist.
Mary Jones has a BFA and an MFA from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and is represented by High Noon Gallery, NYC. She has shown her work internationally and is in many notable collections. Jones is a Senior Critic at RISD, where she has taught since 1998, and an instructor at SVA since 2009. She is one of the artists in the Albaamicorum collective, making wearable art. As an art writer, she has contributed to The Brooklyn Rail, bombmagazine.org, and artcritical.com.
